WEEK OF 8/25/14

CURRICULUM NIGHT
THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2014
6:00

Arete means moral virtue and excellence. This is what we will strive for this year in my class. My goal is to help your child grow in all areas, not just academically. Organization, study skills, study habits, virtue, and overall growth are all things we will take on as tasks.

This week’s class motto is: Enter Silently, Exit Silently

Each week we will discuss a class motto. This is the second weekly motto. We will talk about how it is very important to move silently when exiting and entering the room. Silence assists in keeping order. It allows for instruction and ease of exiting. Upon entering the room, students understand the importance of remaining silent and engaging the next task.

This week in Class:

History: Students will begin a unit on mountains. We will explore mountain ranges of the world and students will gain an appreciation for the different types of mountains. We will even venture outside to take a gander at the mountains (or big hills) of the valley. This is a precursor to our medieval Europe unit. Mountain warfare was prominent in this period so students will gain an understanding of the climatological difference between sea level and mountain level. They will see the way this weather can change outcomes of wars.

Science: Students will begin my favorite unit-meteorology! A little secret about me- I studied to be a meteorologist. Students will learn about the atmosphere, weather data, weather maps, and even predict a weather event or two. We now have our own weather station at school as well: http://www.weatherlink.com/user/mpa

Language Arts: Spalding continues and we move away from basic words and handwriting practice into deeper words. Students will understand all 70 phonograms and be able to break down words using each one. In grammar proper nouns and pronouns are on the docket. We will also continue reading The Princess and the Goblin.

Math: Singapore Math continues with a review of multiplication and a move into factorization and multiples.

Onward and Upward!!!
